The PINK OYSTER growing kit includes 1 kg of spawn and 15 kg of straw pellets with growing instructions.

With 1 kg of mycelium and 15 kg of pellets, you can start a 2 m² bed. You can expand it once the mycelium has fully colonized the bed and produced a harvest. Then, you only need to add fresh pellets; no more mycelium is required.

Pink oyster mushrooms grow naturally in tropical and subtropical climates on bamboo, rubber trees, and palms.

In Estonia, it’s ideal for growing in greenhouse cucumber or tomato beds covered with a layer of straw pellet mulch. Pink oyster mushrooms tolerate high temperatures and can colonize a straw pellet bed very quickly.

Pink oyster is a very delicious mushroom. When fried, it has almost no mushroom flavor and tastes more like meat or chicken. It has a thin texture and is easy to prepare—just a quick sauté in butter with a bit of salt, and it’s ready. Delicious!

MAKING THE BED:

  • The best time to start the bed is after the night frosts have passed, when tomatoes thrive in the greenhouse. Until then, store the mycelium in the coolest place at room temperature.
  • Take an unopened bag of straw pellets and open it for the first time.
  • Spread one-third of the pellets evenly in the bed as mulch for tomatoes or cucumbers.
  • Water generously; the pellets will expand at least threefold.
  • Open the mycelium bag for the first time.
  • Break up any hard clumps of mycelium with clean hands.
  • Sprinkle half of the bag evenly into the straw pellet bed.
  • Spread another portion of pellets into the bed and water generously again.
  • Sprinkle a new layer of mycelium.
  • Spread the final layer of pellets and water generously.
  • In the following days, use the finest mist setting on your hose to water daily, at least enough to moisten the top layer, even if the rest of the greenhouse doesn’t need watering yet.
  • The first mushroom pins will appear in about 10 days.
  • You can harvest your first mushrooms about 5 days after that.
  • Harvest the crop and continue misting; the same bed can produce several more harvests until the frost arrives.

NB! Do not mix the pellets with the soil, as they will use up the nitrogen in the soil, leaving the plants with too little. However, the pellets make excellent compost—just collect them from the bed in the autumn and compost them in a separate pile.

NB! Do not put the pink oyster mycelium in the refrigerator; instead, store it in the coolest place at room temperature until you’re ready to start the bed.
